The two sides of escapism
I’ve always thought of escapism as a way of engaging your imagination and having temporary relief from reality. Like the wonderful place just on the other side of the closet where animals can talk and magic is real. Sidestepping mundanity into a place where anything is possible.
As an ‘adult’, I’m realising escapism has two sides to it. That sometimes we use social media and substances not escape to, but to escape from. When we avoid our problems or fail to take responsibility for our reality we refuse ourselves the chance to work on them and become better.
